The statue "Tarira"
Tarira is one of William Heinesens fantasy figures; the legendary and alluring young girl, half dream and half reality. She is desire and enchantment, and William Heinesen has represented her not only in story but also in paper collages.
The statue resides in a small park in Tórshavn. It stands in memory of one of our great authors, William Heinesen, and is made by the Faroese sculptor, Hans Pauli Olsen.
Tarira
Choir
Tarira is a Faroese chamber choir of 20 singers, all experienced in choral singing and music in general. The choir was founded in the spring of 2002 and several of the founding members are still in the choir.
One of the main objects of the choir is to perform contemporary pieces by Faroese, Nordic and international composers, as well as baroque and renaissance music.
Tarira takes great pride in commissioning pieces from Faroese composers and has, during its 20 years commissioned over 50 pieces.
Tarira is often asked to sing for a large variety of jobs, from the ceremonious performance before the Royal Danish Court, performance at the Nordic Music Days to rather alternative assignments, such as the cooperation with composer Kristian Blak for the premiere of his first opera.
Tarira also collaborated with the Faroese singer-songwriter Teitur on his project “Weekdays” for choir and ensemble, and performed and recorded music in Faroese, and English, by the Faroese singer-songwriter Elin Brimheim Heinesen, arranged by Enzo De Rosa.
Tarira’s reputation has been firmly established through many high-level performances both at home in the Faroe Islands and abroad.

Bernharður Wilkinson
Conductor
Bernharður Wilkinson started his musical career at an early age as a chorister at Westminster Abbey. He later went to the Royal Northern School of Music where he studied the flute. After finishing his master’s, he secured the position of solo flautist with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of the highly successful Reykjavik Wind Quintet, touring worldwide, recording many CD’s and playing at such places as the Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall and Sidney Opera house. He later became assistant conductor of the Iceland Symphony. He was also guest conductor of the St Petersburg philharmonic and the radio orchestra in Sofie. He also conducted two choirs in Iceland, Hljómeyki and the Philharmonic choir. In 2003 Bernharður moved to the Faroe Islands where he is the conductor of the Symphony orchestra and the choir Tarira.

Greetings from Tórshavn
Dear listeners. Allow me on behalf of Torshavn City to bid you welcome to a unique concert experience with the Faroese Chamber Choir TARIRA - one of our most unique choirs.
Original Faroese music is primarily vocal. During the twentieth century choirs have played an important role in the musical history of the Faroes, although we do have an aboundance of modern musicians, bands and classical composers. We also have several world-renowned music festivals in the Faroe Islands.
“The Association of Music Schools in Faroe Islands” was established in 1985. It’s main purpose is to give to every child the possibility to receive qualified instrumental teaching and musical training. We are very proud of our education in music.
“Torshavn School of Music” is a local music school where young children may take studies in performance, ensemble and music theory. The school also offers tuition using the Suzuki method. Students may prepare to take the examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
Tórshavn is the capital and far the biggest town in Faroe Islands. Although small by international standards it has everything people expect from a capital in an up-to-date and modern society. This inspiring city is bubbling with life. It has never been a boring place and is certainly not tedious these days.
As Mayor of Tórshavn I hope that you will enjoy the concert and tie many bonds of friendship to the benefit of our future cooperation.
In addition to Renaissance music, Faroese music is also on the menu, specially selected music to show what is happening on the Faroese choral scene at the moment
We look forward to showing our British neighbors that in the Faroe Islands we have a rich selection of choral music, both within traditional and contemporary music.
I also hope that you will carry home with you many pleasant memories.
Thank you and enjoy!
Heðin Mortensen Mayor of Tórshavn
